The Racer snake belongs to the Colubridae family of snakes. These are one of the large varieties of snakes present on this planet. They are swift nonvenomous snakes. When we consider the racers present in North America, they all belong to a single species and that is known as Coluber constrictor.
But there is one more thing to understand and there are several species present in Southeast Asia and all belong to genus Elaphe and they are also known as racers. One of the types is blue racers and these are found in western and central North America and they are nothing but the subspecies of these racers.
Characteristics Of Racer Snake
These racer snakes are plain bluish in colour and there are many racers that even found in brownish, grey, and even in greenish-blue colour. They usually feature yellow colour bellies. Black Snake is one of the racer’s subspecies and these are nothing but eastern species. The entire body of this snake will be black and there is one exception that there will be some kind of white patches. These patches are usually found in throat and chin.
The young in these species are mostly spotted and they also carry blotches. C. Constrictor has a range that starts from southern Canada and it goes till Guatemala. Even though it carries a scientific name of C. Constrictor, it never follows constriction for killing. Racers always hold down their prey. Its prey is mostly a warm-blooded animal and by using the weight of the coils, racer kills its prey and then swallows it completely.
North American Racer Snake
These are mostly long-tailed and they also have very big eyes. They feature smooth scales and they are very interesting to look at. They have a unique appearance compared to all other species of snakes. North American racers are considered to be one of the fastest of all snakes found on this planet.
These snakes are highly active in the day time too. They can move at the highest speed of 5.6 km in an hour. This speed is the same on the ground as well as inside the bushes. In case if they are cornered, they start vibrating their tail. This is one of the distinguishing features of these racer snakes. When they are cornered, along with vibrating their tails they also strike them continuously.
The Color phases of the coachwhip are also referred to as racers in the United States. They have one more name called western black snakes.
The most important thing that we should understand about these racer snakes is that even though they are classified into constrictor category, they never make use of constriction for their prey. They just kill them and then swallow. These snakes are nonvenomous and they are harmless varieties in their family.
They are fastest among all the snake varieties found to date and they can move fast both in bushes and on the ground. Speed is the skill for which these racers are actually popular and of course, they gained attention for their appearance as well.
